The Voice: Telford builder through to semi final
- Published
A builder from Telford said Sir Tom Jones telling him he was through to the semi-final of The Voice UK was the best moment of his life.
Callum Doignie, 28, sang A House Is Not A Home for Sir Tom and guest mentor Jamie Cullum on Saturday night's show.
Mr Doignie is to compete on Christmas Eve with 12 other contestants for a place in the final four.
"I heard my name and all composure was lost," he said.
Mr Doignie, who works as a builder, started singing karaoke during the coronavirus pandemic when one of his brothers built a bar in their back garden.
He said he felt out of his depth in Saturday's round as the competition had lots of professional singers in it and he had "only done karaoke".
His dad Ian Doignie said he could not be prouder and that over the years they had introduced each other to different types of music.
"I took him to see Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show and different things like that.
"I've introduced him to Roy Orbison and a lot of the old ones but he also introduces me to a lot of the new stuff, he's got such a wide range," he said, adding that The Voice had been a boost for his son and "reassured him that he is good".
Callum Doignie watched Saturday's show with his family at his brothers house in matching Christmas pyjamas.
"It was daunting, it was just one big room but it was a nice acoustic room for my voice," he said.
The contestants were split into groups of three and all sang the same song, but only one went through from each group.

"It was the best moment of my life especially being told by Sir Tom the living legend," he said.
Mr Doignie also thanked Shropshire people for their support and said he was often asked for photographs around his local area.
Since being on the ITV1 programme, Mr Doignie has also received more bookings for next year.
"I did a gig at a pub the other night... the grind never stops," he said.
