A public consultation will be opened on a proposed £28m redevelopment of Shrewsbury Sports Village.

Currently no decision has been made on the future of the Quarry Pool with some councillors saying the Sports Village redevelopment will spell the "death knell" for the Quarry.

The Sports Village at Sundorne plans include a 25m eight-lane pool suitable for galas and competitions.

Shropshire Council said its priority was to maintain swimming in the town.

The pool would also be used for general swimming as well as another 17x10m studio pool with a moveable floor for learners and other water sports, including children's parties.

The proposals also included:

  • Seating in pool hall for 250 spectators and space for 250 competitors

  • New reception area and lobby with cafe overlooking the pool

  • New children's soft-play area

  • New 130-station fitness suite

  • New dance studio

  • New 30-station cycle spin studio

The redevelopment would also include maintaining existing facilities including the main sports hall.

'More opportunities'

Councillor Robert Macey said the scheme would bring "competition standard swimming facilities to Shropshire".

"We are also proposing to install state-of-the-art technologies to heat and power the centre which would mean it has the potential to achieve net zero carbon emissions," he added.

Mr Macey said the proposals for the sports village "stand on their own" and "no decision has been taken on the future of The Quarry Swimming and Fitness Centre".

The plans for the Sundorne facility were put on hold in 2021 to prioritise a plan for a £12.1m pool and leisure development in Whitchurch.

A date for the start of the consultation is yet to be decided.
