Mendip District Council votes to cut jobs in budget

Twenty-three jobs are set to go from Mendip District Council after the authority approved its budget for the next financial year.

A 14% cut in government funding meant the council had to make total savings of £2m. The council employs just under 200 staff and has a budget of £16m.

The Conservative-led council has already reduced numbers of managers employed.

Councillors also voted to freeze their share of council tax.

Parish councils have still to decide whether to increase their percentage of the portion of the council tax.

A grant of £50,000 to arts funds will not be renewed, although voluntary groups including Citizens Advice will continue to be supported.
