Six areas in Somerset are being looked at as possible locations for rubbish treatment sites.

The Conservative-run county council has launched a consultation, external on how waste and recycling should be dealt with over the next 17 years.

Over 100,000 tonnes of rubbish were sent to landfill in Somerset last year, costing the council £8m in landfill tax - the highest in the west country.

The council wants more to be recycled to save money and space.

Areas earmarked for some form of waste plant are: Bridgwater, Taunton, Yeovil, Street, Frome and Wells.

The council said it was not considering putting a waste plant in each of these areas - it might just use a couple of them - however it was ruling out the rest of the county.

The consultation ends on 11 May.
