Thousands flock to RNAS Yeovilton's air day

Thousands of people have travelled to Somerset for one of the West's biggest air shows.

The air day at RNAS Yeovilton is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the first Lynx flight - a helicopter designed by Westland in nearby Yeovil.

Also taking to the skies over the base is a restored Vulcan XH558 bomber which was flown in from RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire.

Organisers say more than 35,000 people were expected for the one-day event.

The Westland Lynx remains the official holder of the helicopter world speed record which it has held for the past 25 years.

An Avon and Somerset Police spokesman said traffic in the area was heavy and urged motorists to follow signs directing them to official event car parks.
