The Kenyan runner Edwin Kiptoo has won the Bath Half Marathon in a time of 62 minutes and one second - beating the course record by eight seconds.

Jane Muia, also from Kenya, was the first woman around the 13.1 mile (21.1km) course which started and finished in Great Pulteney Street.

A spokeswoman for the race organisers said nearly 12,000 runners took part in this year's event.

The race, now in its 31st year, raised more than £1.4m for charity last year.

Organisers describe the two lap course, which straddles the River Avon, as a "fast and flat course for both beginners looking to complete the course and more experienced runners looking for a personal best".

All the places in the popular event, which sees fun runners compete alongside elite athletes, were taken within weeks of them going on offer in November.

Many roads in the city were closed for the event and extra parking restrictions imposed.
