Meetings in Cheddar about proposed supermarkets

Two public meetings will be held in a Somerset village to discuss plans to build two new supermarkets.

Tesco and Sainsbury's want to build the stores - Tesco at Cheddar Football Club, Draycott Road, and Sainsbury's on land at Steart Farm, Wedmore Road.

Cheddar Parish Council said it wanted to make sure local people had the chance to have their say on the plans.

Both meetings, on 8 and 15 January, will be held at 19:00 GMT at Fairlands Middle School, Cheddar.

Sedgemoor District Council is currently considering both proposals and will decide which, if either, is most appropriate for the village.

Sainsbury's plans state the chain wants to erect a food store with customer cafe, car parking, access and landscaping.

Tesco also wants to build a food store with parking, landscaping and a petrol station. Both sites are less than 3km (about 2 miles) apart.

Cheddar Football Club, known locally as The Cheesemen, was established in 1892 and moved to the club's current location in 1952.

The club is looking to build new facilities at Labourham Drove, Cheddar, less than a mile from its current Bowdens Park ground.
