A recycling centre that was badly damaged by a fire will not reopen until the building beside it is demolished.

Taunton Recycling Centre has been closed since a fire broke out in the material recovery facility building in the early hours of 3 October.

The building, where recycling is sorted, is structurally unsafe.

Somerset Council has not given any more detail about when the demolition will take place but said managers Biffa has found a company to do the work.

"Our recycling sites in Wellington and Bridgwater will remain open seven days a week until Taunton Recycling Site can safely re-open," said a council spokesperson.

"Teams from Taunton recycling site have been redeployed to help and will meet and greet visitors during busier periods."

The blaze was accidentally started at the Taunton Recycling Centre and its contents were destroyed.

Somerset Council has 16 recycling sites across the county which are managed by Biffa on the council's behalf.
