A recycling centre is to remain closed for the foreseeable future following a fire.

Devon and Somerset Fire Rescue Service was called to Taunton Recycling Centre on 3 October at around 03:00 BST.

Somerset Council has said the site cannot reopen until the material recovery facility is made safe or demolished.

On Tuesday, structural engineers assessed the site to work out the cause of the fire, which is still unknown.

Up to 60 officers and seven appliances were in attendance to tackle the fire at the Biffa-owned site.

There is currently a "very small fire" continuing to burn, according to the council.

Wellington and Bridgwater recycling sites will continue to open seven days a week and staff have been redeployed from Taunton to offer extra support.

Councillor Dixie Darch said: "I want to thank residents for their patience and understanding.

"We are sorry that you cannot access the site yet.

"Teams are working hard to find the best way to make the site safe, but please bear with us while plans are put in place to reopen."
