Weston-super-Mare's Marine Lake will be closed for up to seven weeks

A lake, popular with swimmers, is to close for seven weeks for further dredging work.

North Somerset Council is using £20m from a government Levelling Up Fund on Weston-super-Mare's Marine Lake.

Work on the lake, that dates back to the 1920s, will start on 6 February and is estimated to last until 25 March.

Walkways, steps and ramps will then be improved and the public toilets upgraded. The work is due to be completed by spring 2025.

Councillor Mike Solomon said: "Dredging is an important next step in our exciting plans for Marine Lake within our levelling-up funded programme.

"I'm sure local people, like me, will be encouraged to see this continued progress.

"Our Levelling Up funding is able to continue the work done previously thanks to the council's earlier investment in bringing the lake back into use as an outdoor swimming and water sports destination."

Mudlarks, a group of volunteers who assist with the management of the lake, are helping the council maintain the facility.

Claire Trevor-Roper, one of the directors of the Mudlarks, said: "We're extremely pleased that the council remains committed to not only maintaining but regenerating the lake as a key attraction in the town."
