Sheffield boxer Clinton Woods to feature on bench

Sustrans has commissioned benches in other locations around the country including Port Talbot

The Sheffield boxer Clinton Woods has been chosen to be appear in a portrait bench on the Trans Pennine Trail.

The boxer who became the IBF Light Heavyweight World Champion in 2005 was voted for by people in his hometown.

The art installation will be made of steel and will feature two other people, including a soldier who was killed in action in Afghanistan and a local countryside campaigner.

Mr Woods said it was one of his proudest moments.

The bench will be placed between Halfway in south-east Sheffield and Killamarsh in Derbyshire on the trail.

Mr Woods said: "Being honoured in this way by local people is just amazing.

"There's nothing quite like having the respect of the people you've grown up around and lived among during your life."

Mr Woods' portrait will feature alongside Corporal Liam Riley from Killamarsh who died in Afghanistan in 2010 and Rotherham-born Colin Savage who has campaigned to make the countryside more accessible.

The bench is part of a national public art installation by cycling charity Sustrans, which has commissioned the work after receiving money from the Big Lottery Fund.

The bench is due to be installed later this year.
