Sheffield Ski Village 'very hazardous' following fire

On Sunday the main building of the Sheffield Ski Village was destroyed

Police have warned people to stay away from the "very hazardous" Sheffield Ski Village following two fires.

The first fire at the facility in Vale Road on Sunday destroyed the main building while a second blaze on Monday damaged part of the ski lift.

The second fire is believed to have been started deliberately but investigations are continuing into the cause of Sunday's fire.

The management of the ski village said they hoped to reopen within weeks.

Slopes to re-open

Vicky Lloyd, the general manager, said although the main building was destroyed, the cafe and clubhouses remained.

"As soon as the site is safe and with the assistance of [the Peak Performance Snowsports and Sharks Ski Club], we are hoping that the slopes will reopen as soon as possible - maybe in the next couple of weeks," Ms Lloyd said.

"The slopes may open on a members-only basis in the short-term, but the long-term plan is to rebuild," she added.

South Yorkshire Police were called to the site on Tuesday evening, where they arrested two men on suspicion of attempted theft.

The men were later released without charge.

In March 2011, the adventure playground at the Ski Village was destroyed in a suspected arson attack.
