Sheffield City Council road scheme marks first anniversary

Work has been completed in five areas of Sheffield and is continuing in seven others

A £2bn project to improve roads and footpaths in Sheffield has seen 185 miles (297km) of streets and pavement resurfaced in 12 months.

The "Streets Ahead" programme of works has also seen 4,000 old street lights replaced with LED lights, cutting energy bills by £90,000 per year.

Trees, kerbs and gullies will also be improved by contractor Amey over the next four years of the project.

City council leader Julie Dore said work was "on programme and budget".

"Streets Ahead is progressing really well and we are starting to make the difference we all hoped for - better lighting, smoother roads and an improved environment," she said.

"The project is on programme and budget and will be great for Sheffield."

Work has been completed in five areas of the city and is ongoing in seven others.

Improvement work will begin in Meadowhead, Woodseats, Beauchief and Hutcliffe Wood in September.

Councillor Jack Scott added: "This is a huge project and it has led to the creation of around 500 new jobs with Amey and their local suppliers."
