Repair work means the pool remains closed

A Sheffield leisure centre that was closed despite opposition has been officially re-opened after volunteers campaigned to take it over.

Stocksbridge Leisure Centre was shut in April as part of a £50m programme of cuts by Sheffield City Council.

Community group 4SLC will now run the facility with some financial help from the local authority.

Faye Howard from the group said those involved were determined to make the centre a success.

She said: "Success breeds success and if you go to the leisure centre there's a mood and energy, you can feel the difference."

Volunteers have been working over the last several weeks to redecorate and get the site ready for its opening.

The swimming pool remains closed because of structural problems.
