Neighbour helped Doncaster car crash fire casualty

A neighbour has described how she helped one of the seriously injured casualties of a car that crashed into a garden wall, causing a fireball.

Two males were killed and a third is in hospital with life-threatening injuries after the crash in Branton near Doncaster on Tuesday.

Jenny Rowland said she put her cardigan on the injured male who was on fire.

An eyewitness has described seeing at least two cars "racing side by side" moments before the crash.

South Yorkshire Police said it was "concerned" about the health of two other men who were in the car and fled the scene, and urged them to come forward.

Insp Steve Askham said: "From the witness accounts we have so far, one of the men had a terrible leg injury, which we believe was caused by the fire. People have told us the men were seriously injured and we believe they need urgent medical attention due to the impact of the crash and also the fire."

The officer said identifying the men who died would be a lengthy process.

He said: "It is going to be a difficult process due to the circumstances of what took place, we're trying to do that as fast as possible to bring some reassurance and understanding to the relatives who are very, very concerned to find out if their loved ones have been involved in this incident.

"Because of the nature of the incident it's going to be a fairly lengthy process."

South Yorkshire Police said the man being treated in hospital has "some significant burn injuries".

Ms Rowland was at home with her daughter Kelsey when they heard an "horrendous noise" from the crash at around 12:50 BST on Poppyfields Way.

She said they went outside and two males got out of the overturned car, which had burst into flames.

"We said 'are you OK, is there anybody else in the car?' but they didn't answer and they took to the hills and ran down the village."

Ms Rowland said a couple of minutes later another man got out of the car and went over to her.

"His hair was on fire so I took my cardigan off and put that out and my daughter took him into the front room.

"He was saying, 'am I going to die? Stop the pain.'"

One local business owner said his CCTV system caught the movements of the cars before the crash.

He told BBC Radio 5 Live: "We saw there were two cars, possibly three cars, racing side-by-side and... they were hitting one another.

"The wing mirrors and so-forth were flying off and dust from the edge of the road.

"After that they sped past and there was an almighty crash and that was out of sight."

Michael Burton, who lives in the house with his parents where the car crashed, said his girlfriend was inside at the time but was not hurt.

The 21-year-old added: "From what I can gather there has been a speeding car down the road, it's lost control and gone through the bollards at the bottom and ended up in the front garden on its roof on fire."
