An 18-month-old boy was found by police in the back of an abandoned car after a high-speed chase.

The child was found in the vehicle in Rotherham after a man jumped out, police said.

Police said the driver "jumped red lights and reached speeds well in excess of the speed limit" as officers tried to stop the car on Saturday.

Police said the child was unharmed. A 19-year-old man has now been charged with several driving offences.

Officers from South Yorkshire Police's Operational Support unit said the driver jumped out of the car in Rotherham while it was still moving.

The force said: "The pursuing officer was surprised to find the [child] seat in the of the rear of the car.

"They were even more surprised to find an 18-month-old little boy in it, thankfully uninjured, happily rubbing a slice of pizza all over his face."

Callum Shepherd, 19, of Browning Road in Rotherham, has been charged with dangerous driving, failing to stop for police, driving without insurance and driving not in accordance with a driving licence.

He was remanded into custody to appear before court on Monday.
