Police have charged a man with criminal damage after he spent 27 hours up a crane in Sheffield.

South Yorkshire Police said they were called to Pond Street at 21:00 BST on Monday by a person concerned about a man's safety.

Officers said he was "brought to safety" at about 00:30 BST on Wednesday, with Pond Street reopening.

Craig Connelly, 42, was charged with affray and criminal damage amounting to more than £5,000, police said.

Mr Connelly, of no fixed address, has also been charged with obstructing or disrupting a person engaged in a lawful activity and he was remanded in custody.

Police said he had also failed to appear at court in Bristol for another matter.

Mr Connelly will appear before Sheffield Magistrates' Court on Thursday morning.
