Call for Rotherham lollipop men and women to wear bodycams
- Published
Body cameras should be worn by lollipop men and women in Rotherham in a bid to help prosecute drivers who fail to stop, councillors have said.
Nationally, 1,200 youngsters were injured each month in traffic-related collisions near schools, according to two Conservative councillors.
A motion by Adam Tinsley and David Fisher suggests the cameras would "aid documenting and prosecuting" offences.
Rotherham Borough Council is due to discuss the motion on Wednesday.
According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the motion by councillors Tinsley and Fisher stated: "School crossing patrol operatives face instances where cars fail to stop.
"We believe the council is seemingly not recording these instances along with prosecuting vehicle owners."
The councillors also called on the authority to introduce "school streets", where vehicles were restricted from accessing roads outside schools at drop-off and pick-up times.
The last major change in road safety around schools was introduced in 2009, when traffic regulation orders were brought in to enforce school crossings, they added.
