Armed men used a "small explosive device" to try to force open a Co-op store's cash machine.

The events at the premises on Devonshire Square in Ubberley, Stoke-on-Trent, unfolded on Sunday.

Police said they were called to reports of a break-in at about 04:30 BST.

Two men, one with a crowbar, were seen on CCTV entering the store and after failing to open the cash machine with an explosion, they left the scene on a motorbike.

They were then seen heading towards Bucknall on Ubberley Road, said police.

One was wearing a blue hoodie, the other a black one.

Detectives have appealed for information from the public, and requested any relevant security camera footage.

Co-op has previously warned that crime in its national chain of outlets has hit record levels, and could make some locations "no go areas" in which to open stores.
