A man has been seriously injured by a dog believed by police to be an XL Bully.

The animal attacked two other dogs at about 21:00 GMT on Wednesday and members of the public tried to intervene, said the Staffordshire force.

A man suffered serious arm injuries and was taken to hospital.

Two people have been arrested following events on Ellgreave Street in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent.

A woman, 22, from the city, and a man, 29, of no fixed address, remain in police custody.

They were detained on suspicion of owning a dog dangerously out of control.

The force said it had contained the dog involved.

It added two dogs had also been seized by officers and taken to secure kennels.

Anyone with information has been urged to contact police.
