Police were called to Ellgreave Street, Burslem, on Wednesday night

A man is in hospital and a dog has died after three people were attacked by two suspected American bully XLs.

People tried to stop the attack, which left a Chihuahua dead in Stoke-on-Trent, on Wednesday night.

One of the three people attacked suffered arm and leg injuries during the attack, at about 21:00 GMT in Ellgreave Street, Burslem.

A man and a woman arrested on suspicion of owning a dog dangerously out of control have been released on bail.

The man in hospital did not suffer life-threatening injuries, Staffordshire Police said. The two other people injured were treated at the scene and did not need to go to hospital.

Witness appeal

Both of the dogs involved in the attack were contained by officers and have been secured.

The arrested pair, a man, aged 29, and a 22-year-old woman, both from Stoke-on-Trent, have been released on conditional police bail.

Anyone with information about the attack has been urged to contact police.

It comes after another suspected XL Bully attack took place in Burslem, in January.

In that incident a dog attacked another dog, but there were no injuries reported.
