Shrewsbury: Man rides moped across Wales for hospital
- Published
A man has raised nearly £3,000 for Royal Shrewsbury Hospital by riding his moped over the 10 highest roads in Wales.
Ian Mair, from Tywyn in Wales, completed his challenge in May on a 1967 50cc moped.
He rode 230 miles (370 km) in total.
He was inspired to raise funds for the hospital after the haematology ward cared for both his daughter and grandson.
Mr Mair said: "In the midst of the early days of the pandemic, the doctors, nurses and staff on Ward 23 could not have been more dedicated, caring and kind. They saved her life."
'A real difference'
In November 2020, his daughter Kathryn was diagnosed with leukaemia when she was six months pregnant.
She started chemotherapy immediately and, after two rounds, her son was born fit and well.
She then returned for the remainder of her treatment and is now in remission. She has also given birth to a second son.
Oncology and haematology matron Angela Cooper said Mr Mair's fundraising would help improve facilities for patients.
Julia Clarke, director of public participation at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust, external, added: "We are grateful to Ian and his family for their support.
"The money raised will help to make a real difference to our patients and their loved ones."
