A new mayor has been chosen for Stafford borough - and will become the First Citizen 37 years after his father held the same role.

Frank James was nominated at a council meeting and he will serve over the 2024-25 financial year.

His father Doug James was mayor in 1987.

"I'm very proud and I hope I can make Stafford proud," said Mr James, who is currently the Labour councillor for Holmcroft.

He is also a great-grandfather who has lived in the area for more than 50 years.

During his working life as a postal worker, Mr James became a senior union representative.

He will take over from Andy Cooper at a ceremony in May.

Stafford's first mayor Matthew Craddock was elected in 1614. The borough is required to have a mayor by law and must remain apolitical during their civic year.
