Essential maintenance work is starting on a bridge on the A12 linking two sides of a port town in Suffolk.

The Bascule Bridge in Lowestoft will close for 12 hours from 1800 GMT.

It is undergoing repair for a fault in the lifting mechanism, the Highways Agency said.

The bridge will be closed until at least 0600 GMT on Monday and then between 2000 and 0600 GMT for the next five weekday nights.

The work is expected to be completed by Sunday 27 March.
