Guildford's new centre for tourism and culture opens

Guildford's tourist information centre has moved in with the borough's art collection, housed in the 17th Century Guildford House.

The centre was awarded Visit Britain official partner status last year and is the only one of its kind in Surrey.

It is hoped the move from Tunsgate to the High Street will mean an increase in visitor numbers and save costs.

Guildford council said the co-location would strengthen both services and boost the local and tourist economy.

Chris Mansfield, head of economic development, said: "It creates a unique and vibrant arts and information centre hosting a greater range of facilities for residents and visitors - all on one site."

Grade I-listed Guildford House was built in 1660 and became home to the art collection in 1959.
