A Surrey town will host the penultimate stage of the Tour Series cycling event, despite fears it would not go ahead.

Woking Borough Council had said it could not provide the £50,000 needed for the event, which attracted 15,000 spectators for the final in June 2010.

John Kingsbury, the leader of the Tory-run local authority, said local businesses had stepped in to sponsor the event.

He said: "Our thanks must be extended to these companies."

The Tour Series is a calendar of professional cycle races, launched in 2009, held on town and city centre circuits across the UK.

Woking hosted one of the 10 legs of the event in 2009 and the final last year. This year's event takes place on 14 June.

Mr Kingsbury added: "Not only does this high profile event showcase some of the UK's top professional cyclists, but also it firmly stamps Woking on the map as a top-class venue."
