Surrey County Council gets quad bike to tackle snow

A four-wheel drive quad bike gritter is on standby to be used in Surrey if severe weather hits the county this winter, the county council has said.

The vehicle is the latest weapon in the council's armoury to tackle ice and snow, councillor Ian Lake said.

The transport spokesman said the bike would be used on a trial basis to take grit to difficult-to-reach areas.

Surrey County Council has more than 40 normal gritters at its depots and nearly 17,000 tonnes of salt.

Mr Lake said: "As part of our campaign to keep Surrey moving this winter, we're trialling with our contractor May Gurney this quad bike to get to those difficult-to-reach areas."

He said the quad bike had a plough on the front and a grit container on the back.
