London 2012: Box Hill Olympic road race rings unveiled

The Olympic cycle road races take place on 28 and 29 July

A set of Olympic rings has been unveiled at Box Hill in Surrey, on the route of the cycle road races.

Made of aluminium, the 15m (50ft) wide by 7m (23ft) tall rings will be on the National Trust site for the duration of the 2012 Games.

The structure is about the same size as the rings suspended over Tower Bridge in London, Surrey County Council said.

Sebastian Coe said: "These rings will excite and inspire local people and visitors to Box Hill."

The men's road race is on 28 July, with the women's the following day, and the cycling time trials on 1 August.

The route takes cyclists from the Mall, through west London, out to Surrey and back again, and includes a 9.6-mile (15.5km) circuit around Box Hill.

Helyn Clack, from Surrey County Council, said: "This proves the Games aren't just about London.

"Surrey's giant Olympic rings will become one of the most memorable icons of the Games with television cameras sending pictures of it around the world.

"It will encourage people to visit our beautiful county not just now, but for years to come."
