The whereabouts of an old blue Raleigh bike could provide a vital clue about the death of a cyclist found with a head injury, police believe.

Derek Abbott, 67, was discovered on 20 June next to a house in White Rose Lane, Woking, in Surrey, in a distressed state and without his bike.

He was taken to hospital but died two weeks later.

Police said a witness had seen several men putting a blue bike into the back of a van in White Rose Lane on 21 June.

They were seen with the bike between 06:30 and 08:00 BST.

Ch Insp Martin Goodwin said: "We are no further forward in tracing the bicycle which we know Mr Abbott took everywhere he went.

"I believe that finding this bike, and determining whether it has sustained any damage, will help us progress this investigation.

"One of the theories we are exploring is that Mr Abbott was involved in a collision and the driver failed to stop."

He said it was known that Mr Abbot had left the Sovereigns pub in Guildford Road at 20:37 and had cycled to White Rose Lane, where he was found at 21:05.

Anyone who saw the bike is asked to contact Surrey Police.

Officers are also seeking an Asian man in his 20s who was driving an old, brightly-coloured car, and stopped to help Mr Abbott.
