A man has appeared in court charged with murdering his wife who was stabbed to death in the street.

Mother-of-four Aliny Mendes, 39, died after being attacked in London Road, Ewell, Surrey, on Friday afternoon.

Surrey Police said a man got out of a car in London Road and attacked her.

Mr Godinho, speaking via a Portuguese interpreter, gave his nationality as Brazilian and Italian.

There was no application made for bail.

A plea and trial preparation hearing has been set for 15 March.

Det Ch Insp Mark Chapman said: "I can now confirm that the Aliny Mendes and Ricardo Godinho were married, but had separated.

"However, I would continue to urge people not to speculate about the details around the circumstances of what happened, and that if anyone has any information that which could help with our investigation, to get in touch with us."

An online fundraising campaign set up to repatriate Ms Mendes' body to Brazil has beaten its £40,000 target.

Another man arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender was released with no further action.

Surrey Police said the case had been referred to the Independent Office of Police Conduct.
