Hundreds of miles of roadworks across south-east England will be removed before Christmas, National Highways have said.

The M20, A3, A21 and A27 are some of the key roads that will have large stretches of roadworks cleared.

National Highways say 98% of roads will be free of roadworks across the UK.

They said they will take action "where it is safe to do so" and that traffic officers "will help to keep people on the move".

In Kent, just over 150 miles of roads will be cleared of roadworks before Christmas, while in Sussex, nearly 120 miles will be cleared, and in Surrey, just under 13 miles.

Minister for Roads, Guy Opperman, said: "We're on the side of drivers, which is why National Highways is lifting hundreds of miles of roadworks to make sure everyone's festive getaway is as smooth as possible, improving journey times and helping people get from A to B easier."

Across the country, more than 1,000 miles of roadworks are being removed in preparation for Christmas.
