Elmbridge borough councillors approved the plans for a replacement skatepark in Cobham

Plans for a new skatepark which received support from the local community and as far afield as Barcelona have been given the go-ahead.

Elmbridge Borough Council's planning committee approved the application at a meeting on Tuesday.

The council is the owner of the land at Leg O'Mutton playing field in Cobham.

An application for a replacement skatepark received 188 letters of support and was unanimously agreed to applause at the meeting.

Martin Elbourne spoke in support of the plans, and said there had been "extensive support shown for this very inclusive project".

He added: "Support from Cobham residents and those in surrounding areas, in addition to that from the local police and church representatives, is both heartening and a justification of our decision to promote the project."

Cobham and Downside councillor Alistair Mann pointed out that of the 188 letters of support, 130 were from postcodes in or around the area.

He also said support for the application had come from Barcelona, Scandinavia and "many points in between".
