Repair work starts on Chichester's historic city walls
- Published
Work has begun to repair the historic walls that have surrounded Chichester in West Sussex for 1,700 years.
The work forms part of the City Walls project, funded by a £685,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Engineers will drive anchors into the the walls to prevent them from leaning, while stonemasons carry out repairs.
The walls are a classed as a Scheduled Monument and at nearly 1.5 miles (2.4 km) long are thought to be the "most intact circuit" in the South East.
The money has also been earmarked to pay for research into the history of the structure, and community and education projects.
Next year, information panels will be installed and a leaflet and souvenir guide will be produced for visitors.
