Some council-run youth centres in West Sussex face closure as part of a local authority's cost-cutting measures.

West Sussex County Council is seeking to make £2m of savings from its youth services budget as it seeks to save £79m by 2014.

The authority has set out its proposals in a consultation document, external.

Under the plans, the council said it would target resources at young people who have been identified at most risk or who need additional support.

'Big Society'

"We need to consider new and imaginative ways to provide services," said Councillor Peter Evans, the cabinet member for children and families.

"A number of youth activities have already been taken over by the voluntary sector and local community groups," he added.

"We are keen to find out what more can be done to support this Big Society agenda."

In a consultation document, the council said it would focus on areas of need in Crawley, Worthing, Adur and Arun.

However, it said support would not be limited to those places.

The consultation runs until 14 October.
