Brighton and Portslade schools could get 20mph zones

The council said there had been a history of accidents around Stanford infant and junior schools

Proposals for two 20mph pilot schemes in Brighton and Portslade are to be considered by councillors.

Brighton and Hove City Council said the schemes were in busy locations around Stanford infant and junior schools and three schools in Portslade.

The council said the Stanford area had a history of accidents.

Both schemes would include residential streets surrounding the schools. Members are to vote on whether to proceed to public consultation.

'Roll-out across city'

Councillor Ian Davey said: "We are bringing forward proposals for trial areas for 20mph speed limits, focused on schools and the surrounding residential roads, in response to concerns from local people."

He added: "We hope to consult people next year on a roll-out of 20mph limits in communities across the city.

"We will be looking closely at how the pilot schemes work and involving the local community, to help shape future proposals."

The schools in the Portslade 20mph zone would be Peter Gladwin Primary, St Nicholas C of E Junior School and Portslade Infant Schools.

The council said a third smaller 20mph zone had also been suggested around Saltdean Primary School but the authority was not going ahead with the scheme at this stage, although it would be kept under review.

Councillors at the meeting on Tuesday will also consider cutting the speed limit from 40mph to 30mph on Lewes Road, north of the University of Brighton sites, and on Falmer Road between Woodingdean and Ovingdean.
