Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre closure considered

A leisure centre in West Sussex faces closure after a local authority decided it was underused and too costly to maintain.

Horsham District Council said Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre faces a repair bill of up to £1.5m.

The authority said up to a third of its indoor space is not used and it was considered "surplus to requirements".

If agreed, the centre would close in December 2012 and the building would be demolished.

The move follows a review which concluded the district was "well provided" with leisure facilities.

Councillor Jonathan Chowen, the cabinet member for leisure, said it was important the Tory-run council spends "public money smartly and where demand dictates".
