Sussex offshore Rampion wind farm weather mast complete

Work on a meteorological mast used to survey the site of a proposed wind farm off the East Sussex coast has been completed.

The 110m (360ft) mast has been installed by energy company E.ON, which hopes to construct up to 195 turbines off the Brighton coast.

Work on the Rampion windfarm began on 2 April but was delayed due to adverse weather conditions.

The mast is expected to measure wind speed, wave height and sea currents.

The Rampion wind farm could create enough electricity to power up to 450,000 homes, according to E.ON.

Chris Tomlinson, E.ON's development manager on the project, said wind turbines generate electricity 85% of the time and can withstand gale-force winds.

He added that a series of public exhibitions about the wind farm attracted more than 4,500 people.

A consultation on the plans is due to end on 6 May.
