Speed limits in some residential areas of Brighton and Hove have been reduced in phase two of a scheme to limit drivers to 20mph in the city.

The areas in phase two range from Portslade in the west to Whitehawk in the east and Coldean in the north.

Some streets had been removed from the scheme, but were reinstated after a campaign by residents.

Brighton City Council said phase one in the city centre reduced traffic speed on almost three quarters of its roads.

A council spokesman said: "Early monitoring from the first phase of speed limits introduced to the city centre in 2013 has shown a decrease in traffic speeds on 74% of roads.

"The number and severity of collisions and casualties have also fallen in in the central area."

Phase one of the 20mph speed limit was approved by the council's transport committee in January and introduced in April.

Phase two includes roads where the majority of respondents to a public consultation supported the reduction in speed limits.

The council said Preston Drove, Stanford Avenue and Surrenden Road had been initially removed from the scheme after doubts about public support, but after a petition was signed by about 700 people the roads were reinstated.

Consultation on phase three will begin later in the year, a council spokesman said.
