An opera singer completed a performance despite dislocating her knee when she fell during a production at Glyndebourne on Sunday.

The performance of La finta giardiniera was temporarily stopped after German soprano Christiane Karg tripped.

A GP in the audience was able to relocate the knee and Miss Karg carried on singing while sitting on a seat.

The 33-year-old, who was playing the part of Sandrina, received a standing ovation at the end of the production.

A spokesperson for the East Sussex opera house said Miss Karg was resting before she could return home to Germany.

'Incredible'

They added that the performer was "delighted" she had been able to continue her role and had "received a wonderful reception from the audience."

Knee specialists have said it was "incredible" the opera singer was able to carry on the performance.

James Lewis, an orthopaedic surgeon at Goring Hall Hospital, said the injury would have been "really very painful" and Miss Karg "did well to concentrate and finish".

The next performance of La finta giardiniera is on Thursday although Glyndebourne has not said if Miss Karg will perform.
