New Brighton and Hove 20mph zones proposed

Brighton Council said collisions were down 17% in the 20mph zones

Additional 20mph zones are being proposed in Brighton and Hove as council figures show a 17% drop in collisions in existing areas.

Collisions in the central 20mph zone fell from a three-year average of 371 per year in 2010-13, to 264 in 2014 after the speed limit was lowered.

A Brighton and Hove City Council report is now recommending a statutory public consultation on a third zone.

Zone 3 would include Mile Oak, Hangleton, Rottingdean and Saltdean.

On Hove seafront a 20mph limit is proposed on Medina Terrace, King's Esplanade, Sussex Street and St Aubyns.

Councillor Peter West, chair of the transport committee, said: "We're getting increasing support on 20mph from residents who feel it makes, or will make, their streets safer, more pleasant places to live."
