Brighton's i360 tower has glass viewing pod fitted

A huge new tower being built on Brighton's seafront has had its glass viewing pod fitted.

The 162m (531ft) i360 tower will open in the summer and be known as the British Airways i360.

The 90-tonne pod is made of 24 segments of handmade glass and will hold up to 200 people, rising up to 137m (450ft) in front of the city's West Pier.

The tower will give visitors views of up to 26 miles along the Sussex coast from Bexhill to Chichester.

Architect David Marks said: "It is incredibly exciting to see the pod finally take shape on the tower"

The first test "flight" of the i360 is due to take place in March

The tower was designed by Marks Barfield Architects - the team behind the London Eye.

A beachfront building where visitors will disembark is also being built and will house a brasserie, cafe and gift shop.

Developers hope the tower will attract at least 700,000 visitors per year, making it the city's most popular paid-for attraction.

If purchased on the door a ticket will cost £15 for adults and £7.50 for children.
