Preston Barracks £150m regeneration scheme unveiled

The £150m scheme will have new academic buildings, student accommodation, and 350 homes

More than 1,000 jobs could be created with plans to regenerate an area around a derelict barracks in Brighton.

The Momentum Lewes Road masterplan comprises Preston Barracks and two car parks on the University of Brighton's Moulsecoomb campus.

Draft plans include a research laboratory, 350 homes, accommodation for 1,300 students, shops, and cafes.

If approved by the city council, the £150m scheme is expected to bring more than £500m to the local economy.

Richard Upton, of developers U+I Plc, which is working in partnership with the neighbouring university, said the aim was to deliver "a wonderful place to live, work, and learn, that is lively and bursting with creative energy".

The project has attracted a £7.7m grant investment from the Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership.

It will also include a new home for the university's Brighton Business School, along with new teaching and learning facilities.

Preston Barracks, in Lewes Road, was originally built in 1793, and was formally owned by the Ministry of Defence.

It has been derelict for more than 25 years, and was bought by the city council in 2002.

Council leader Warren Morgan said: "Preston Barracks has been on the drawing board for 14 years and it is a key site for new affordable housing for local people, jobs and growth."

The proposals are currently on display to the public at Preston Barracks until 16:00 GMT on Saturday, before being moved to Churchill Square in the city centre on 30 April and 1 May.
