A temporary policing hub has been launched to tackle anti-social behaviour and crime in a Sussex town.

Dubbed "PC Pod" by Sussex Police, the structure in the High Street in Crawley, is about the size of a garden shed.

The hub will be manned by teams tackling knife crime and serious violence and remain in place for six months.

It follows the success of similar schemes in Eastbourne and Brighton.

Sussex Police said the "pod" would not "replace police stations" but would give officers a presence in the town centre.

The solar-powered structure has been made with 1,312 recycled plastic bottles.

It is expected to be manned by Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings.

Det Ch Insp Simon Yates said: "The safety of our community is a priority for us, and this new hub provides a highly visible presence in the busy town centre to deter criminal activity and engage with members of the public.

"It will build on the extensive work we already do to tackle anti-social and criminal behaviour in the area."
