A 200-page book to celebrate the centenary of Middlesbrough's Transporter Bridge has been published.

The grade II-listed structure celebrates its birthday on 17 October, and Middlesbrough Council commissioned the book to mark the occasion.

The Transporter - 100 years of the Tees Transporter Bridge - has been written by Dave Allan, a media manager.

All money raised from the sale of the £15 book will be invested back into bridge improvement work.

'Labour of love'

The book tells how the bridge was bombed by a German Zeppelin during World War I.

It also charts its television appearance in Auf Wiedersehen Pet and the film Billy Elliot.

The 225ft (69m) high bridge is one of Teesside's most recognisable landmarks and is seen as a symbol of the area's industrial heritage.

It links Middlesbrough and Port Clarence over the River Tees.

Mr Allen, who works for Middlesbrough FC, said: "Being a proud Teessider, I have always loved the Transporter, so writing its official history was a privilege and a true labour of love."
