Jobs at a Teesside steelworks will be secured after it won a contract to supply pipeline for a project in the Gulf of Mexico.

Tata Steel has been awarded the contract to supply the pipe for Enterprise Products Partners LP's crude oil export pipeline.

It will involve delivering more than 48,000 metric tonnes of steel pipe from its 42-inch mill in Hartlepool.

It said it would secure jobs at the site where more than 700 people work.

Tata Steel said the contract value was in the "high tens of millions of dollars".

It will provide 105 miles (169km) of 18-inch diameter line pipe. It will be laid at depths of up to 7,000ft.

The pipe is for the Lucius Development Project in the Gulf of Mexico's Keathley Canyon area.

Tata Steel director of sales and marketing Deirdre Fox said: "We have a long record of success with providing line pipe for deepwater projects. This is a significant contract for Tata Steel."
