Saltburn car parking charges plan cancelled by council
- Published
Plans to introduce new car parking charges in a seaside town have been scrapped.
Redcar and Cleveland Council had proposed restrictions around Saltburn but has now ruled them out following a consultation.
Traders and residents held protest meetings against the changes, which it was feared could deter tourists and shoppers.
The council said the "strength of feeling" had been taken into account.
But councillor Steve Goldswain said there was still a need to review parking policy across the borough.
"We will be undertaking this work in the months ahead," he said.
Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland MP Tom Blenkinsop welcomed the Saltburn decision and said such a "draconian approach" had been "needless".
