James Cook Birthplace Museum reopens after revamp

Volunteers have helped paint the museum and selected objects for display

A Teesside museum has reopened to the public after a £50,000 makeover.

The Captain Cook Birthplace Museum in Middlesbrough closed in November for refurbishment work, after it received Heritage Lottery Funding.

Volunteers visited regularly to assist staff with painting and construction work and also helped select objects for new displays.

The navigator and explorer was born in a cottage on the site in 1728 - a plaque marks the spot.
