The cleaning work reveal large sections of the bridge were corroded

The deep clean of an 80-year-old Middlesbrough bridge has revealed extensive damage to the metal work.

Newport Bridge was expected to reopen on 7 September after undergoing a month-long clean ahead of being repainted.

But Stockton Council said it would now remain shut until October to repair 50,000m of badly corroded metal.

Cyclists and pedestrians will still be able to use the bridge during repairs.
