Work is to begin on a £7.7m upgrade of the sewer network in Seaton Carew in a bid to reduce the risk of flooding.

Northumbrian Water is replacing and upgrading the machinery at Seaton Carew Headworks and Seaton Carew Sewage Treatment Works.

The two sites serve nearly 155,000 people across Hartlepool, Seaton Carew, Billingham and the surrounding area.

The company said it will help protect bathing water quality and reduce the risk of flooding to nearby homes.

The work, which begins on 10 August, is expected to be completed by Summer 2016.
