Middlesbrough FC plans tribute Ali Brownlee, 'Voice of the Boro'

Middlesbrough Football Club has unveiled plans for a tribute to BBC Tees presenter Ali Brownlee, who died from cancer on Sunday.

Ali, 56, was known as the "Voice of the Boro" after commentating on the club for more than 30 years.

Officials have revealed a big screen tribute will take place at the Riverside Stadium on Tuesday ahead of the home game against Cardiff.

There will also be a minute's applause before kick-off.

A club spokesman said supporters would also be encouraged to join in further applause at 56 minutes.

The spokesman added: "There will be a big screen tribute to Ali featuring some of his finest moments, and that will be followed by a minute's applause.

"Fans are also urged to join in with a further applause on 56 minutes as a mark of respect for Ali, who passed away at the age of 56."

Ali, who also presented the breakfast show on BBC Tees, died at his home in Middlesbrough on Sunday night surrounded by family.

He began his career working in a bank before, in 1982, the BBC offered him the chance to report on the Boro.

He regularly raised money for charities such as Children in Need, Sport Relief and Zoe's Place, a hospice for children for which he was an ambassador.

Middlesbrough players wore black armbands for their match against Leeds United on Monday and supporters cheered when a photo of him was shown on the Elland Road ground's big screen.

Floral tributes have also been placed at the gates of the Riverside Stadium.
